The Question: How long will Arsenal miss Eduardo? by puppdogsandicecream

We’ve heard the term “double compound fracture”, but what does it really mean?

Good Lord.

As you can see from the picture, a compound fracture is a bone break in which the bone begins to poke through the skin.  A double compound fracture?  I can only imagine it involves the bone protruding from the skin in two places.

It sounds horrifying, and I’m sure it is- but there is some good news from the land of internet diagnosis.  According to the Caremark website, the typical healing time for a broken bone is six weeks, taking into account the age and health of the patient, as well as the type of care they recieve.  The site also cautions compound or “open” fractures are far more dangerous, more susceptible to infection, and take longer to heal depending on the amount of damaged tissue surrounding the fracture site.   Eduardo will likely have the best care available in London,  so negligence and infection shouldn’t be an issue- however we must remember American football great Joe Theismann suffered a career ending double compound fracture during an NFL match in 1985 (Gaffer’s Quickie Disclaimer: before clicking on the video, realize you will see another depressing injury- you’ve been warned).

So back to the original question: how long will Arsenal be without Eduardo?

Factor in healing time (about 9 weeks), rehabilitation and fitness (4 weeks), and at best it could be 12 weeks.  Three months is an incredibly optimistic and possibly insane figure, and you’d hope Eduardo’s trainers will have him take a bit more time away (even into the next season) so that he doesn’t come back a permenantly knacked figure only fit for the Soccer Circus, a la Owen.
